Spring onions are an essential vegetable for practically any plot. They're delicious and they can be grown very close together, making for very efficient use of space.
White Lisbon is a traditional variety with a mild flavour great for salads.
Time from seed to plate: 8 weeks
They're so easy that there's not much to say about them! Sow in a row directly in the soil, or sow in a gutter if you've got a serious slug problem, and plant out later.
Either way, sow thinly with one seed about every half inch and cover with a fine layer of soil/compost.
Sow a few fresh seeds every month or two for a continuous supply.
Spring Onions can grow very close to one another so there's no need to thin them.
Start harvesting when they're 6-8 weeks old. Carefully pull out the bigger onions, firming back the soil so the smaller ones can keep on growing.
