Despite it's delicate appearance, chervil is a robust, quick growing plant.
It's best to wait till July to sow, otherwise it'll soon run up to seed. It will thrive through late summer and autumn, and even survive the winter in a sheltered spot - with a flush of fresh growth in the springtime.
Time from seed to plate: 12 weeks
Chervil is best sown in July or August. Sow seeds directly into your soil, or in an a gutter. The advantage of the gutter is you can slot the seedlings in as and where space comes available on your plot. Either way sow the seed thinly, leaving 1/2in between seeds, cover with a little compost and water.
Chervil can be slow to germinate, so don't panic if you don't see leaves quickly. Once it gets going it will fly along.
Thin your seedlings to one every 2in. Plant out in your plot leaving 6in between plants and 12in between rows. Try and position it in light shade because it can get scrawny and shoot up to flower in the full summer heat. It also helps to keep it moist.
Chop away freely as and when you need leaves, but always leave an inch or so of growth above the soil. This will resprout within a week.
