Spring Onions are easy to grow, and because they're very narrow you can pack lots into a small area of soil - making them perfect for patios and roof terraces.
From sowing spring onions will be ready to eat ain just six weeks.
Time from seed to plate: 6 weeks
Sow anytime from March till July. Fill a grow bed with multipurpose compost and make a shallow groove parallel with one side where you're going to sow your seeds. It needs to be about 1cm deep. Then take a pinch of seed and sprinkle the seed into the groove, about one every cm or so and cover with a thin layer of compost.
Sowing in a trug is bit more unusual, but if you're short of space, why not?
Spring Onions can grow very close to one another so you only need to thin to about 2cm between each seedling, although this isn't essential if you're going to harvest as salad onions.
Start harvesting some of your bigger spring onions at 6-8 weeks, creating gaps for other smaller ones to grow on.
